Help senior pets stay active & healthy

As a direct result of advances in vaccinations, spaying and neutering, and improved nutrition, our pets are living longer and happier lives. With this blessing comes the reality of higher incidence of age related disease. As your pet ages, new problems can arise such as loss of mobility, digestive problems, vision impairment, and kidney and heart disease. Regular check-ups at Fox Hollow Animal Hospital will increase the quality of your pet's life and make their 'Golden Years" happier and healthier!

Early detection of age-related problems combined with the latest in advanced medical techniques can help your pet maintain a wonderful quality of life for a very long time. We will do all that we can, including pain management, so that your pet is happy and comfortable throughout his or her senior years.

When is a dog a senior?

With many dogs living well into their teens, many owners wonder: When is a dog truly senior? The answer is that there is no specific age at which a dog becomes senior. Individual pets age at different rates. However, most dogs become senior at 7 to 10 years of age, and most large- and giant-breed dogs become seniors earlier than small-breed dogs.

Cats

Cats are also living well into their teens or even their twenties. Again there is no specific age at which a cat becomes a senior. Individual pets age at different rates. As a general guide, however the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) has suggested the following age ranges to help you assess how the aging process may be affecting your cat’s health: Mature to middle-aged (7-10 years), Senior (11-14 years), and Geriatric (15+ years). At Fox Hollow Animal Hospital, we normally recommend thorough veterinary exams twice per year for senior pets, with lab work performed at least once per year.
